January 8, 2013 UFO Sighting Over Amherst

What was the UFO spotted over Amherst and Pelham?

On January 8th of 2013 residents in both Amherst and Pelham Massachusetts reported seeing a triangular or diamond shaped aircraft about two or three car lengths long,  flying overhead from about 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.  The object appeared to travel slowly and silently and moved unusually low according to some witness testimony.

Of course both the FAA and the military were immediately questioned on if they confirmation of an identifiable aircraft in the area.

Lt. Col. James Bishop confirmed that the FAA had recorded a military aircraft flying in the area. According to him a C5 cargo plane took off from Westover at 5:30 p.m. that evening. “It went out of the area and returned later and flew again in the local area until about 9:30 p.m.,” he said.

Was the UFO spotted over Amherst really just a misidentified C5?
Was the UFO spotted over Amherst really just a misidentified Air Force C5 cargo plane practicing landing?

But even he is skeptical that a C5 is what people saw over Amherst.  “There’s just no mistaking that,” he said speaking of the C5 cargo plane. “It’s quite a loud sound and quite a big aircraft.”  A C5 measures almost 250 feet in length, much larger than what witnesses report seeing.

What was the Amherst UFO?

If the witnesses all saw a C-5 cargo plane with its landing lights on, and all miscalculated the height of the object, this could account for the diamond or triangular light pattern.  The added height would make it appear to be smaller and the distance would make this beast appear to be moving slower, mimicking what the witnesses report about this UFO.

The problem with that is that many of the reports state that the object was flying low to the ground and one woman said it was only 75 to 100 feet above her car.  A c-5 flying even a few hundred feet above the ground would be clearly identifiable at terrestrial in origin.

What about the lack of noise from the UFO?

This is also the big reason that the Amherst UFO was likely not a C-5 cargo plane.  They are huge, with huge get engines that make a lot of noise.  As stated above even Lt. Col. James Bishop didn’t think that anyone could miss the engine noise off one of these planes.
