DOPS (Division of Perceptual Studies)

What Is DOPS?

DOPS stands for the Division of Perceptual Studies — a research unit within the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. DOPS is the most prominent academic institution in the world conducting rigorous scientific research into phenomena that challenge mainstream materialist models of consciousness, including NDE (Near-Death Experience), reincarnation, OBE (Out-of-Body Experience), and other anomalous perceptual experiences.

History

DOPS was founded in 1967 by Dr. Ian Stevenson, a psychiatrist who became the world’s foremost researcher on children who report memories of previous lives. Stevenson traveled extensively, documenting thousands of cases of claimed past-life memories in children — many involving verified details that the child could not have learned through normal means. His meticulous methodology and academic credentials brought unprecedented scientific credibility to a subject that had been largely dismissed by Western academia. Upon Stevenson’s retirement, Dr. Bruce Greyson and later Dr. Jim Tucker continued and expanded the division’s research programs.

Research Areas

DOPS conducts research in several interconnected areas. These include children who report memories of previous lives (the division’s longest-running and most extensive research program), NDE (Near-Death Experience) studies including the phenomenology, after-effects, and veridical perceptions reported during NDEs, OBE (Out-of-Body Experience) research, mediumship and claimed communication with the deceased, and consciousness studies broadly, particularly as they relate to the question of whether consciousness can exist independently of the brain.

Methodology

DOPS researchers employ standard scientific methodology adapted to the unique challenges of studying anomalous experiences. Case studies are documented with detailed interviews, verification of claimed facts, and elimination of alternative explanations including fraud, false memory, and information leakage. Statistical analyses are applied where appropriate, and findings are published in peer-reviewed academic journals. The division’s position within a major research university provides both institutional credibility and access to the broader academic community.

Significance

DOPS occupies a unique position in the landscape of paranormal research. As an academic institution within a respected medical school, it bridges the gap between anecdotal paranormal claims and rigorous scientific investigation. The division’s body of published research — particularly on children’s past-life memories and NDEs — represents the strongest empirical challenge to the assumption that consciousness is entirely produced by and dependent on the physical brain.
