Maybe Black Triangles Are Discs: The Weyauwega Photo Reopens an Old UFO Debate

A post on r/UFOs asks whether black triangle UFOs were ever really triangles at all. The poster argues that some of the sightings may be discs with lights arranged in a triangle, and points to a famous daylight case from Wisconsin.

The Weyauwega Case

The case, as described in the thread, happened in Weyauwega, Wisconsin, on February 1, 2003. A mother and her son encountered a silent disc-shaped craft passing above them in the daytime. Though the object itself looks circular in the image, several prominent lights form a distinct triangular pattern. That, the poster suggests, would make the craft look like the nighttime black triangle many people report, because in the dark you cannot see the disc, only the lights.

The Replies

Plenty of readers shared sightings of their own. One said they watched a solid black craft hover slowly over their house in 2007, close enough to hit with a baseball, with three white lights on each corner and a big red one in the middle, totally silent. Another recalled a thick, slow-moving craft with a white light on each corner and a red orb in the center, and a back side lit white. A third described a lighter gray triangle in 2019 with no lights that looked about two football fields long, and another a rounded triangle watched for roughly 15 minutes in 2014. Someone saw a triangle craft in England in 2015 and said it changed their mind about UFOs.

Others pushed back on the premise. Several commenters insisted there are definitely triangle-shaped craft with solid black bodies. One suggested the triangles are the human-made ones.

My Take

I am 60 percent open on this. The disc-with-lights idea is neat because it could explain why witnesses describe triangles with odd light layouts, and why daytime photos so rarely show a triangle. But the catch is obvious. One case cannot tell us what a thousand witnesses saw at night, and the commenters here describe different lights, sizes, and shapes. These could be several things at once: aircraft, drones, discs, and misread stars, plus a few things we cannot name.

What I like about the thread is the humility. When the sky is dark, the lights tell you where the edges are, and your brain does the rest. That is exactly why daytime photos like the Weyauwega one matter so much to UFO researchers.
