CE1 (Close Encounter of the First Kind)

What Is CE1?

CE1 stands for Close Encounter of the First Kind — the first category in the Hynek Classification System for UFO encounters. A CE1 is defined as a visual sighting of a UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) at close range, generally within approximately 150 meters (500 feet), where sufficient detail can be observed to rule out misidentification of conventional objects.

The Hynek Classification System

The Close Encounter scale was developed by astronomer J. Allen Hynek, who served as a scientific consultant to the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book from 1948 to 1969. Hynek initially approached the subject as a skeptic but gradually became convinced that a percentage of UFO reports represented genuinely unexplained phenomena. His classification system — published in his 1972 book — provided the first standardized framework for categorizing UFO encounters by type and proximity, moving beyond simple sighting reports to a structured taxonomy.

What Defines a CE1

For an encounter to qualify as CE1, the witness must observe the object at close enough range to perceive detail — shape, surface features, lighting patterns, and movement characteristics. The close proximity distinguishes CE1 from more distant sightings classified as Nocturnal Lights, Daylight Discs, or Radar-Visual cases in Hynek’s broader system. CE1 events do not involve physical evidence left at the scene (that would be CE2), observation of entities (CE3), direct interaction or abduction (CE4), or human-initiated contact (CE5).

Significance

CE1 encounters are considered particularly valuable in UAP research because the close range reduces the likelihood of misidentification. A light in the distant sky could be many things, but a structured craft observed at 100 meters provides far more data for analysis. CE1 reports frequently include detailed descriptions of shape, size, color, sound (or absence of sound), flight behavior, and duration that contribute to pattern analysis across the broader body of UAP reports.

Related Terms

CE1 is part of the Hynek Classification System alongside CE2 (Close Encounter of the Second Kind), CE3 (Close Encounter of the Third Kind), CE4 (Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind), and CE5 (Close Encounter of the Fifth Kind). The system connects to broader UAP research through MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), NUFORC (National UFO Reporting Center), and CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies), which Hynek himself founded.
