terrifying bumps under their bed at night.

Headphones Die at 3:45 AM, Then Something Starts Slamming the Bed

A Reddit user posting in r/ParanormalEncounters says something has been living under their bed, and it has now visited three times.

The post is titled “Monster under my bed,” and the author, u/Recent_Smoke4952, opens with a disclaimer that most of us would probably make too. They know it sounds like something a kid tells a parent at bedtime. They insist it really happened. What follows is a short, tightly told account that starts with a dead battery and ends with a question the writer cannot answer: what do you do about a monster you cannot see?

The First Night

The poster sleeps with headphones on, playing white noise. That detail matters, because it means the room is normally covered in a layer of sound. On the night in question, the headphones were at 100 percent battery when the poster lay down. Around 3:45 AM they died. According to the poster, a full charge usually lasts more than a week.

Waking up confused, the poster tried to turn them back on and got nothing. They set the headphones aside and lay back down with eyes closed. That is when an “off feeling” set in, the sense of being watched. The poster opened their eyes and scanned the room. Nothing was there, so they shook it off and tried again.

With eyes closed, they heard one of the soda cans stored under the bed scrape across the tile floor. Then something slammed into the bottom of the bed hard enough to lift the poster up. It happened over and over. The poster stayed completely still and prayed it would leave them alone. Eventually the slamming stopped, but the can kept getting scraped around.

Cold Fingers

The most unsettling moment came after the slamming ended. The poster worked up the nerve to move and slid an arm under the pillow. The bed has no headboard, so it sits slightly off the wall, leaving a gap about an inch wide that runs straight down along the side of the bed. The poster’s arm was above that gap.

Almost right away, the poster says, they felt cold fingers sliding across their skin. They jumped up and sat in the center of the bed. The thumping started again and the can shifted some more. Then it stopped, and the poster grabbed the headphones. This time they powered on, and the battery read 96 percent. The poster was finally able to sleep.

Two More Visits

The second encounter came about four days before the post was written and followed almost the same pattern. The one difference was the addition of panting and scraping from beneath the bed. The third happened the night before the poster wrote the post. According to the poster, the noises were louder, and the thumping was more frequent and lasted longer.

The poster ends with a plain statement. They think they have a monster under the bed, they have no idea what it is, and they do not know what to do. We could not find any follow-up from the poster in the comments, so we do not know how the next nights went.

What Commenters Said

The replies split into two camps, the serious and the sarcastic.

User Kooky_Capital_4208 offered the most detailed response. In their view, it is not a monster at all, but more likely a neutral or negative human spirit that knows it is scaring the poster and enjoys it. They said they have known a spirit like this before and that it tends to escalate if nobody takes a stance. Their advice was to tell it out loud, calmly and firmly, that it is not allowed in the home and must leave, without anger, swearing, or yelling, since reactions feed it. They also suggested asking Archangel Michael for help, and noted that they are not religious themselves. Beyond that, they recommended upbeat music, positive shows, and plenty of laughter, since spirits like this reportedly hate happiness. Another commenter, dezi_mahn, agreed it was a negative spirit with some malice and suggested declaring it gone in the name of Jesus Christ.

The skeptical camp took a lighter approach. User -AlienSkin_ asked, with a raised-eyebrow emoji, whether the poster really had something bump the bed and touch their arm and never got out of bed to look. DayBakedBean replied that they certainly would not, and would never look under that bed again, adding that they might even board up the room.

A Skeptic’s Take

Of course, there are conventional explanations worth considering. The first is timing. The noises started right after the white noise stopped. A person who normally sleeps under a blanket of sound may suddenly notice every creak and settle in the house, and a mind that wakes at 3:45 AM can turn a small noise into something much bigger.

The second is the brain itself. Sleep researchers have long described the strange states people can fall into between waking and sleeping, which can involve a sense of a presence, odd sounds, and even touch. The poster does describe being able to move and sit up, which does not match the classic frozen feeling, but a half-awake mind can be hard to measure after the fact.

The third is the room. Pests, a pet, or air moving through that inch-wide gap could account for scraping and a chill on the skin. The post does not mention pets, and something strong enough to lift a bed is a lot to pin on a mouse, so this explanation has limits. The headphones are the oddest detail. A battery that drops from full to dead and then reads 96 percent could point to a faulty reading or a glitch, but the timing is a coincidence that is hard to wave away.

Monsters Under the Bed

The monster under the bed is one of the most familiar fears in childhood, which is part of what makes this account feel strange. We tell children there is nothing there, we check the space together, and we turn the light back off. It is unusual to hear a grown adult describe the same fear, and stranger still when the account includes a set of cold fingers.

Whether the poster has a monster, a lingering ghost, a very vivid set of bad nights, or something else, the poster describes the same pattern across three nights, with the noises and thumping growing stronger each time. A repeating, escalating pattern is the kind of detail that makes a case worth tracking, even when we cannot confirm a word of it.
