Sam the Sandown Clown: The Isle of Wight’s Strangest Entity Case Is Back

Sam the Sandown Clown is either the most charming UFO entity case in Britain or one of the strangest: a seven-foot figure in a pointed hat with a microphone, a pale face with triangles for eyes, and a talent for vanishing along with his hut.

The case is set on England’s Isle of Wight in May 1973, and after decades as a footnote it has had a surprising revival. In 2025 a woman came forward claiming to be the child witness, and the story is back in front of audiences at Bembridge Fort and on podcasts. It is also a good example of how a UFO case can change shape as it gets retold.

What the Children Said

The encounter took place near Lake Common in Sandown. Two children were drawn by a noise that seemed to come from the direction of the small Isle of Wight airport, and they set off across a nearby golf course to find the source.

There they met a humanoid figure about seven feet tall. In the witnesses’ description, he wore a pointed hat, had triangular markings for eyes and a square nose on a pale face, and had arms and legs that seemed made of wood. He carried a black-knobbed microphone with a white flex. The children spent time with the figure inside a small hut and spoke with him, an interaction of roughly 30 minutes. When they left, both Sam and the hut were gone.

Five Years Before Anyone Wrote It Down

The case was first published in the January/February 1978 issue of the BUFORA Journal, the publication of the British UFO Research Association, about five years after the events. One detail surprises many people who know the legend: the word clown does not appear in the original article. The nickname came later, along with the name Sam and the variation All Colours Sam, and Sandown has since adopted him as something of a local Fortean mascot.

UFO researcher Philip Mantle of Flying Disk Press has called it one of the most unusual landing and entity cases on record, which says a lot in a field that does not lack for strange material.

The 2025 Twist

In 2025, a woman claiming to be the long-sought witness, given the pseudonym Fay and said to have been seven years old at the time, contacted Isle of Wight researcher Paul Wilson. According to Wilson’s presentations and podcast interviews, she reports further encounters with the same being in 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1989, and has described her father’s own experiences. She is also said to have provided material evidence, though the nature of it has been discussed only in talks and podcasts.

Wilson presented the case at Bembridge Fort on August 9, 2025, with a follow-up on November 1, 2025. In April 2026, Micah Hanks’s podcast took another look under the title Incident at Sandown: Solving an English UFO Urban Legend.

The Skeptical View

There are plenty of reasons for caution. The first published account came five years after the events, and the story has since picked up a nickname and details that were not in that article. A claim from a woman who says she is the original witness is intriguing, but it cannot be independently verified from the public record, and the supposed physical evidence has not been published for inspection.

A skeptic might see an imaginative encounter shaped by children’s play, a hut that was simply a hut, and a folklore process that turned a vague figure into a clown. A believer might point out that the details are strange in ways that do not match the typical alien template, which makes them harder to explain as cultural borrowing.

Either way, Sam has staying power. More than fifty years on, the debate shows no sign of ending.
