dish disappears

Woman’s Petri Dish Vanishes the Instant It Hits Her Kitchen Floor

A small glass dish fell off a kitchen shelf, hit the floor, and simply was not there anymore. That is the whole strange shape of the story a Reddit user named skoogytheseconf shared to r/Glitch in the Matrix, a community built around exactly this kind of small, unsettling glitch in everyday life.

The user was digging through a kitchen cabinet a couple of years ago when they accidentally knocked loose what they described as “this petri-dish looking thing.” They heard it land. Then they went to pick it up, and it was gone.

An Object With Nowhere to Go

What makes the account stand out is not the object itself but the geometry of the room. As the poster explained, “our kitchen is separate from our dining room, so there’s no furniture it could’ve gone under.” The only hiding spots would have been underneath the fridge or the stove, but both appliances have since been replaced, and the dish was not under either one when they were moved. A baby gate blocked the doorway at the time, ruling out the possibility that the dish simply rolled out of the room.

The poster does not oversell it. “This isn’t really that interesting, but I think about it from time to time,” they wrote, adding a promise that has since become a running joke in the comments: “If I ever find it, I will eat a shoe.”

Commenters immediately picked up the bit, with one asking whether it would be a right shoe or a left. The original poster answered, “Personally, I prefer the left ones,” and later, after someone posted a photo of comically oversized boots, wrote back in caps that they had taken a closer look and those were “very very very big shoes.”

Other Readers Say It Happened to Them Too

The joking aside, several commenters described nearly identical experiences, and their stories are what turn a small kitchen mishap into a pattern worth noticing. A user named Thestolenone recalled dropping a metal coaxial fitting onto a freshly carpeted, completely empty living room. “I watched it fall to the ground and vanish as it hit the floor,” they wrote. “It was just totally gone, nowhere for it to roll to or under. It never turned up.”

Another commenter, lizwyk, described losing a battery the same way years earlier. “We heard it hit the floor, and then it was nowhere. It’s still nowhere, lo these many years later,” they wrote, joking that somewhere in the multiverse someone got a free rechargeable battery. The original poster liked that theory enough to say so directly.

Not every story in the thread ended with an object staying lost. A user going by DancesInStars described two separate incidents where valuable items vanished, only to reappear later, in one case within hours and in another as a replacement was being carried in. They attributed it to “my late grandparents having fun with me,” a common way people frame these small disappearances as something benign rather than frightening.

The most unsettling addition came from faebugz, who described a pet betta fish disappearing from a fully lidded tank while they had been sitting in front of it. “I searched everywhere, tore apart the tank and sifted the sand, checked the filter etc,” they wrote. “She just vanished.” The original poster’s only response was a simple, sympathetic “Aw, I’m sorry to hear that.”

A Mundane Mystery, Repeated Often Enough to Notice

None of this rises to the level of a formal paranormal investigation, and the original poster never claimed otherwise. Skeptics would point out the obvious: small objects roll farther than people expect, gaps under appliances and baseboards are easy to miss, and memory tends to smooth over the boring explanation once enough time has passed. A dropped item rolling into an unnoticed crack is far more likely than an item slipping between realities.

Still, the specific details reported here, an empty room with nothing to roll under, a doorway blocked by a baby gate, appliances checked and rechecked after being replaced, are harder to wave away with the usual explanations. Whether these are simple lapses in searching or something stranger, the sheer number of people willing to share a near-identical experience in the comments suggests this particular flavor of disappearing act is more common than most people admit out loud.
