Do cats have ghosts, or is it just our grief and our imagination filling in the blanks? It is a question that keeps coming up in paranormal circles, and a Quora thread with dozens of answers shows how many people have a story to tell. Some believe a ghost can take the shape of a beloved pet. Others say the whole idea is nonsense. I fall somewhere in the middle, and I have my own strange cat story to add.
What Quora Users Report
Most of the stories in the thread come from people who lost a cat and then felt, heard, or saw something afterward. Nancy Arnold wrote that she once had a beloved cat for more than 15 years before he had to be put down after an illness. Years later, her grandson was sick with a bad cold as a toddler. She got up in the middle of the night to check on him and, in her words, swore she saw her cat sitting on top of his crib. It lasted maybe ten seconds. By morning, her grandson was feeling better.
Cathleen Carstens shared one of the more concrete accounts. Her 13-year-old cat died suddenly, and she had a Ring camera mounted on a cat tower in her hallway. Her cat used to peer into any bowl left up there. A few days after the cat died, she checked the camera footage and said it had captured her cat’s ghost peering into a bowl she had put on the tower earlier that day. That is a vivid detail, and it is the kind of thing that makes people sit up.
Not every account involves seeing something. Donna Donaldson described lying in bed and feeling the unmistakable pounce of a cat landing on the mattress, even though her bedroom door was closed and no living cat was in the room. She said it has happened more than once, in different homes, always at the bottom of the bed. Roseann Schweikert described feeling every footstep of a cat walking up her side of the bed, then raising her arm to let it snuggle in. When she looked, nothing was there. She said it only happened once, but it did happen.
Irene Starr wrote that her family once lived in a house with a ghost cat. Her husband, who does not believe in ghosts, came into the lounge and said he had just watched a cat come down the stairs and disappear. Irene herself later saw the outline of a cat in the kitchen. A couple of minutes later, her three-year-old son said “Cat gone!” without being told what she had seen. Another user, Amelia Lee, said her family of three has seen a small ghost cat running around their home for a year.

My Own Black Cat
This is where my story comes in. I was in the kitchen with my girlfriend when a black cat appeared from nowhere. It was not our cat. It was bigger than mine, black, and moved more smoothly then my geriatric feline. It walked right between the two of us, then continued down the hall, where it disappeared.
A moment later, my own cat came walking into the kitchen from the opposite direction. I remember that part clearly because it ruled out the obvious answer. The cat that had just passed between us was not my cat. My cat was coming from somewhere else entirely.
I have thought about that moment many times. It was not scary, it was just impossible. Thinking back on it, it wasn’t the solid apparition of a cat, but the impression of one. Many of the details were missing, but the shape, the size, the movement, even of the tail all were that of a cat. A cat that didn’t live in my apartment.

The Believers and the Mediums
Some Quora users take the supernatural view without hesitation. Clare Rowley, who describes herself as a psychic intuitive and medium, wrote that cats can appear as full-bodied apparitions and that people may hear a meow or purr after a cat has passed. She said it is also common for pets to visit when their owners feel unsettled or stressed.
Cats, Ghosts, and Old Stories
Ghost cats are not a new idea. Emilie Harpe pointed out that one of the more interesting ghosts reported around the pool area on the HMS Queen Mary is said to be a cat. Several users also mentioned the old belief that spirits are afraid of cats, or that cats can keep them away. Ron Delby wrote that a ghost used to bother him until he got several cats, and he has not been bothered since.
There is also a gentler side to these accounts. Many people describe the visits as comforting, like a final check-in. A few users said they never sensed anything at all, and one wrote that she would love to see her cats again but has not. That seems to be part of the pattern too, since not every grieving owner gets a visit.
So, Do Cats Have Ghosts?
A pounce on the bed could be a house settling, a dream, or a memory so strong it feels physical. A shape in a hallway might be a trick of light. But my black cat was not any trick of the light. It walked a clear path, it passed between two people, and then my real cat showed up from the other direction.
Whether the cat was a lingering spirit, a stray memory in the house, or something we don’t have hard evidence on, but plenty of people have had their own experiences with ghost cats. If cats do leave something behind, they seem to do it quietly, and on their own schedule.
