A Georgia woman says her new indoor cameras recorded someone walking up to a bedroom door that was not on its hinges. She shared the story on r/ParanormalEncounters, and it is one of the creepier house tales I have read this fall. As always, it is one person’s account and I have not seen the clips.
The House With No Bedroom Doors
The poster, who says she is 29, and her husband, 32, had just bought their first home in Paulding County near Dallas, Georgia. It is a three-bedroom, two-bath house built in the 1980s. During the walkthrough she noticed the previous owners had taken the doors off all three bedrooms, but not the bathrooms or closets. Their agent guessed painting, and they moved on. They closed about two weeks before she wrote the post, and she was filming the move for a TikTok series.
A Voice and a Cough
Last Tuesday, while she painted the smallest bedroom, a woman’s voice said her name from somewhere near the doorway. Her husband was in the living room and denied saying anything. That night, editing the time-lapse with headphones on, she heard the same voice on the recording. It sounded familiar, close to her own, but not quite.
A few nights later the coughing started. At about 2:30 a.m. she heard a dry, throat-clearing cough in the hallway while her husband lay next to her. He searched the house with every light on and found nothing, and every window and door was locked. The next night the cough came again at the same time, this time from the foot of their bed. He ordered four indoor cameras the next morning.
3:14 A.M.
On the first night with all four cameras running, her phone logged eleven “Person detected” alerts from the hallway camera, starting at 3:14 a.m. Each clip showed an empty hallway, but the detection box moved a bit farther each time, from the spare bedroom door to halfway down the hall to right outside the couple’s bedroom. In the background she heard a quiet three-note hum, and then a woman’s whisper that she took to be “He’s in my place.”
Her husband had left the bed that night because the mattress was uncomfortable, and had texted her from the couch at 3:12. When she called him at work, he asked whether she had gone into the spare bedroom, because the door had been closed. But the couple had taken that door off its hinges the day before to paint the frame. It was leaning against the wall inside the room. In the hallway clip, though, she could see a closed door at the end of the hall, with a doorknob, a shadow underneath, and a patch of white paint she recognized from the week before. Then she checked the spare-room camera. At 3:14 it showed the door leaning on the wall, exactly where it belonged, while for eleven seconds somebody knocked on it from the other side.
Her update adds the twist. Her husband sent her a screenshot from the hallway camera of her standing outside the spare room at 3:14 with her back to the lens, in the pajamas she slept in. She says she does not remember getting out of bed. In the screenshot, she is holding the doorknob of the door that was not there, and something on the other side appears to be holding it shut.
What the Thread Said
Replies ran the usual range. Some pointed to “mimic” lore, where a presence imitates your voice and you are told to ignore it. Others argued it sounded more like a haunting than a mimic. One commenter shared a very practical story: they heard walking and coughing in a rental, locked themselves in a closet, called police, and found that an opossum in the crawlspace was the culprit. Pest control sealed the opening and the noises stopped.
I lean about 70 percent open here, because the details are specific and the poster is clearly rattled. But the cautious 30 percent is worth saying plainly. This is an anonymous post, I have not seen the clips myself, and an unexplained camera image would need to be checked by someone who can pull the original files. Cameras that run motion detection also produce odd alerts. The part I cannot shake is the voice that sounds like hers.
The ghost question aside, the story works because every explanation raises another question. What took the doors off the bedrooms in the first place?
