Fish Rain In Shrilanka

Strange Thing Sometimes Fall From The Skies

Fish fell from the sky in Sri Lanka in 2014The old adage that “it is raining cats and dogs” may not have literally happened yet, but other animals do fall from the sky!

Recently, villagers in west Sri Lanka have said they have been surprised and delighted by an unusual rainfall of small fish.

The edible fish fell during a storm and are believed to have been lifted out of a river during a strong wind.

Villagers in the district of Chilaw said they heard something heavy falling and found scores of fish with a total weight of 50kg (75lbs).

It is not the first such incident in Sri Lanka – in 2012, a case of “prawn rain” was recorded in the south.

Scientists say that “fish rain” usually occurs when swirling whirlwinds over relatively shallow water develops into waterspouts and sucks in almost anything in the water including fish, eels and even frogs.

The marine life can be carried long distances by buffeting clouds even when the waterspout stops spinning.

Villagers say that the “fish rain shower” took place on Monday with the creatures falling on the village green, roads and roofs.

Some of the fish – each three to five inches (5cm-8cm) in length – were still alive and were put in a buckets of water by villagers who ate them later.

This is the third time this has happened in Sri Lanka, but not from the same area.

In addition to the reported “prawn rain” of 2012 in the south, there was yellow and red “meteor rain” the same year – a weather development that is reportedly still being investigated by US and British scientists.

How Do You Explain A Rain Of Fish?

Scientists are quick to explain the fish rains of 2012 and 2014 in India as a natural phenomenon that occurs when a tornado sucks up a pond and the fish in it, only to drop them miles away as the storm loses energy.  There are several problems with this.  Mainly that these falls are almost always just of one species of creature, and they are alive, and often times there are no clouds or storms associated with the events.  Doesn’t it seem a bit odd that fish lifted violently out of the water, transported miles through the air, then dropped on the ground would survive the ordeal?

Then there are the stranger skyfall events where objects other than fish/frogs and the like have fallen from the sky.

  1. Big deal. This is all easily explained by the knowing.
There are two species of fish that fall regularly from the sky in widely disparate places, many times on cloudless days.
First and foremost is the common, “sickle-back sky trout”, which is quite small and has no true bones at all but an unusually large dorsal fin that appears to aid the fish in becoming airborn, which it does when threatened by predators. It also does so to attract mates but the mates appear to gather round more do to curiosity than sexual frenzy.
Being so light, it is often caught up in air currents and whisked away to locales not native to it. They have also been known to emit a curious sort of “barking” sound when in distress, hence their less popular name of “weiner dog fish.”
The second species is the far more rare, “brown cloud tuna”. It is actually not a tuna at all but tastes somewhat similar according to many. It has large, feathery pectoral fins that it frantically beats during their mating season which apparently and inexplicably attracts female tunas who are called, “fog tunas” as they are not reported to fly.
Like its cousin the sky trout, its efforts at amour sometimes raise it high enough to be whiffed away to distant places. Its “wings” are very light and the “tuna” discard them to escape from the sky back into the sea. Unhappily, they have poor eye sight and less sense so they often land where other creatures feast on them.

    1. Sawbuck I’ve seen those sickle-back fish while fishing in a river behind my family’s house None were actually uh flying but I landed one and I said O Fizz I got one! My younger brother Cody was with me. I shouted GET THE NET!! Well he goes sprinting up the hill to get the net we brought. Well he brings me the net I hold it over the water and I catch the fish It was about .90 outside Cody had took his shirt off and climbed a small tree near the river I caught 17 trout that day Cody was all like Dude how’d you catch that many fish?
I told him the key is to outsmart them possess greater fortitude than them

      1. Deadeye, I think you have set a record. The most I have heard of being caught before was by N’Ogoto, a guide and hunter in the Malpasa region which is also owned by the Jivaro tribe of Brazil. But their odd views of sportsmanship and manliness demand that the fish be caught in one’s open mouth only, no hands or nets involved. He (N’Ogoto) caught only four fish, barely enough to qualify as a decent sushi snack. Your are the current King of Sickle Back Sky Trout fishery! Keep an eye out for falling brown tunas!

        1. You got it Steve But the fish I am really hot after are Channel Cats Blue Cats
Flat-head Cats Cutthroat trout Lake trout Smallmouth Bass Largemouth Bass
Kentucky Bass White Bass and White Perch I only live in Ohio. Some dingbat set loose some Eastern Sickle-back trout into our river I did some research on the Sickle-back trout and what I found out is that they are 5x more aggressive than Kansas razor-back tuna Then again they are a freshwater fish
Razor-back tuna are saltwater fish They’re kind of like Blue Sharks only faster and cleaner when it comes to that BTW I do a little fishing whenever I get some off-time from my job as an East American Home Guard Officer My little brother Cody saw a dead fish on the shore and showed it to me and well that’s how it went But every time I try to get some sack time I have to track down some rouge hunter. But believe it or not the biggest amount of any type of fish I ever caught was 134 Bass sunfish catfish crappie Etc.
Once when I was 8 I caught a 10 pound bass with a 9 pound line Yes it really happened I fought with that haystack of a fish for 2 hours then I finally got him in.
He was the first one. I caught 133 other fish in 15 years Since my grandmother passed away I haven’t done no fishing since then all I do now is work wood and hunt But I hope to catch another Sickle-back trout one day soon I might take a photo of me with it so you can see it talk to you soon Steve
