Few places in America are tied to legend the way the Pacific Northwest is tied to Bigfoot. Dense forest, steep mountains, and long stretches of quiet make it easy to imagine something large staying out of sight.
The stories are older than the famous 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film shot at Bluff Creek, California. Indigenous traditions across the region describe large, hairy forest beings, and modern reports keep coming from Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. In 1969, Skamania County, Washington, even passed an ordinance protecting the creature from harm.
Skeptics point to black bears standing upright, poor light, and the power of suggestion. Believers answer that many witnesses describe the same details and have no reason to invent them. Either way, the forests are big enough to keep the question open.
