A mourner at a family friend’s funeral says a gray, shapeless presence stood beside the eulogy speaker, then kept returning to a stranger across the room.
The story was posted by Reddit user WAISTOSPACE to r/Paranormal under the flair “Apparition.” The poster begins with some background. “Ever since I was little, I’ve been more open to the paranormal,” they wrote, citing premonition-like dreams, talking to “things” as a child, and seeing auras. Even so, they describe themselves as “a very skeptical person” who does not “automatically assume every strange experience is paranormal.”
A Shadow at the Eulogy
The funeral was for a family friend, a relative of the poster’s neighbor. The poster had met the man only five or six times and was there mainly for his family. The service was held in a large Catholic church, with the bells, incense, and prayers.
When the neighbor stood to give the eulogy, the poster says they suddenly felt that someone was standing near him. “I saw what I can only describe as a shadow standing beside him, somewhat behind him.”
The poster stressed that it was unlike anything they had seen before. “It wasn’t a person-shaped shadow exactly. It was more like a large, vaguely defined orb or aura. It was gray rather than black, and it didn’t feel dark or threatening at all.” They also say they knew right away it was the man who had died. “I can’t really explain why I knew. I just did.”
An overwhelming urge to cry followed. The poster says they are not an emotional person and hate crying in front of others, yet they began silently sobbing, and their mom looked at them as if they were “not of this Earth.” As the service ended, the shadow moved to the far wall of the church, where it seemed to observe, “almost like it was watching its own funeral.”
The Man With the Limp
At the lunch afterward, the same feeling returned. The poster looked up and saw the shadow again, this time near a man sitting about three tables away. He was “heavier-set, wore glasses,” and walked with a limp when he stood up. The poster did not know him and assumed he was another relative or friend. All through the gathering, the shadow appeared in different parts of the room but kept coming back to that man and to the neighbor who had given the eulogy.
At home, the poster finally told their mom everything. They described the man at the lunch: heavier-set, glasses, a limp. Their mom went quiet and said, “That’s his best friend.”
“Of all the details from that day,” the poster wrote, “that’s the one that has stuck with me the most.”
Grief, or Something More?
The poster is honest about not knowing what it was: “a ghost, an aura, grief manifesting somehow, or something I don’t have an explanation for.” They are also open to ordinary explanations, such as “grief, the atmosphere of the funeral, lighting, or something about the way my brain processes things.” A skeptic could add that a close friend is exactly who you would expect to be sitting near the family at a funeral lunch, and that once someone feels a presence, the mind may attach it to whoever seems to fit. Still, the poster had no idea who the man was when they noticed him, which is what keeps the story interesting.
Readers had plenty to say. One commenter wrote that the best friend detail “is the kind of thing that flips a weird experience into something way harder to dismiss.” Others said they believe the dead attend their own funerals. “I’ve always believed we see our funerals,” wrote one, while another suggested the poster might be an “undeveloped Medium.” A few brought up religious views, from Catholic ideas about purgatory to a warning about discernment, and not everyone agreed. Several shared their own graveside stories, including a reader who said they felt a late father’s arm around them and smelled his cologne.
The poster has not had a similar experience since, though they have not been to another funeral. Their own take is gentle. “If there is something after this,” they wrote, “we still get to choose who we spend time with.”
