1995 Texas Encounter: Tall Man in a Fedora, Holding a Book, Standing at the Glass Door

A Reddit poster says a very tall man in a suit and fedora was standing at their family’s glass door in the middle of the night in 1995. They posted the story on r/Humanoidencounters and asked a fair question: was it Slender Man, or something else?

The Man at the Glass Door

In 1995, in Granbury, Texas, the poster was about 15 and snuck out of bed on a weekend night to play video games on the home computer in an office their dad had built into the garage. When they were done, they started back across the living room, which had a full glass back door. The poster says that glass never distorted images.

Standing in front of it was a very tall, very skinny man in a full suit and what they called a fedora-type hat. His fingers were long and slender, and he held a book against his chest. The poster ran to their bedroom and hid under a blanket. They say the man just seemed to look at them while they were frozen, and as they ran, it did not feel like he chased them.

Slender Man or Hat Man?

The first replies pushed back on the Slender Man idea. Slender Man is a fictional character, and in fact he was invented online in 2009, so a 1995 encounter cannot be a copy of him. Several commenters suggested the Hat Man instead, a hatted figure that some people report seeing. The poster said they had never heard of it.

One commenter who says they have seen the Hat Man several times, never while fully awake, linked him to sleep paralysis. That person made a point I found useful: the Hat Man tends to be stationary and watchful, more of an observer or sentry, unlike many sleep paralysis figures that rush or approach. According to that commenter, this consistency across reports is part of what makes the Hat Man seem more “real” than most entities. Another reply joked about the Hat Man collecting debts from people who take Benadryl.

The Skeptical Questions

Other replies asked the sensible questions. Was he a solid black shadow, or could you see color in the suit? If it had been a normal person, would there have been enough indoor light to see him better? And one blunt reader suggested it was the poster’s dad. That is not unreasonable, though a hat, a book, and the height the poster remembers make it a hard fit.

I am split on this one, maybe 60 percent open. The account is short and plain, and the poster is not trying to sell anything. But a teenager awake late at night, crossing a dark room with glass doors and reflections, is exactly the kind of setting where the brain will assemble a figure. What I keep coming back to is the book. Not many hoaxers or half-asleep teenagers would invent that.
